About this
Johan launches off the beach at Pearly's and runs out to the mouth of the bay, around Jutten Island and Malgas Island, and back again — an hour and a half to two hours on the water.
The islands are the reason to go. Malgas holds one of only six Cape gannet breeding colonies in the world, Jutten is a seal and seabird island, and dolphins are seen on most trips. You go out around them rather than landing: both are protected reserves inside the West Coast National Park and going ashore is not permitted, which is exactly why there is so much on them to look at.
The boat is surveyed for six, so it is five guests at a time and a minimum of two to go out. That makes it an unusually private way to see this stretch of coast — closer to taking a boat out with someone who knows the water than joining a tour.
Dress warmer than you think. It is open water at the mouth of the bay and the wind comes up in the afternoon.
Times shift with the seasons and the wind. Always double-check directly before heading out, and know your own limits — especially in open water.
