Jukskei at Langebaan

Jukskei is South Africa's own game, played since the trekboer days with what began as the yoke-pin off an ox wagon: you throw a weighted wooden pin down a sand lane and try to knock over a peg at the far end. Think bowls or pétanque, with more of a swing to it.

The club plays on Wednesday afternoons from half past one until around four. There are practice skeis at the courts to borrow, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to bring — turn up in something you do not mind getting sandy.

There are club fees if you stay, but Jaco is clear that you come and throw a few first and see whether the game suits you before any of that comes up. It is an unusually easy thing to try once.

The courts are off Oostewal Road: take the side turning on the left just before Watergat.
