A Langebaan guide
Free things to do in Langebaan
A holiday town will happily take your money. Langebaan also has a run club, a swim group, a paddle group, two beaches and a market that ask for nothing at all — and they are, mostly, what the people who live here actually do.
10 of them are below. Everything here is genuinely free to turn up to; where there is a hat going round or something you might buy once you are there, it says so.
Turn up at a time
No membership and no booking. Arrive, say hello, join in.
Langebaan parkrun
The free, timed 5km that everyone does — walkers, runners and buggies welcome. No dogs: it's a conservation area.
Run, walk, RUN!
Turn up and run — or walk. Three afternoons a week, plus a longer one on Saturday mornings.
Swim2gether
An open-water swim in the warm, flat lagoon, every morning off Main Beach.
Donation
Wednesday Craft Social at Habby Galore
Bring whatever you're making and sit with other people making things. Free, and everyone is welcome.
Lagoon Paddle Group
A group paddle on the lagoon — surfskis and kayaks, flat water, and nobody minding what you turn up on.
Saturday Mountain Bike Rides
A group ride on Saturday mornings. Message Angus to find out where everyone is meeting.
Langebaan Secondhand Bookshop at Home
A well-stocked secondhand bookshop in Country Club, run from home by Robert and Joke Stoltenkamp.
Free to browse — books priced individually
Always there
For an afternoon that needs filling, with no plan required.
Denlyn Park & Craft Market
A park to play in any day, and on the last Saturday of the month the whole town turns out for the craft market.
Main Beach
The town beach — the water shelves so gradually that children can wade a long way out.
Shark Bay
Where the kitesurfers ride. Worth an afternoon just to sit and watch the lagoon fill with kites.
One thing worth knowing
The wind gets up most afternoons from spring onwards. Anything on the water is calmer in the morning — the swim, the paddle, the flat water off Main Beach. The exception is Shark Bay, where the wind is the entire point and the afternoon is when to go.
